The sessile oak tree is the official, national tree of ireland.
There are two oak trees native to Ireland, the sessile oak (quercus petraea) and the common oak (quercus robur).
This lino print was inspired by a recent trip that took me just up the road to Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal.
The protected national park has a breath-taking number of large sessile oaks. this beautiful woodland provides an important habitat for invertebrate species, birds and mammals. the bark is a habitat for mosses, lichens, nesting birds and roosting bats. the oak leaves, acorns, rotting wood and sap are important components of the food chain.
Exploring and trekking around this vast oakland, you cannot help but feel like a small but important piece of something much bigger.
